First, ambient air warms a liquid refrigerant converting it into a gas. Next, the gas is compressed (by a compressor) raising its temperature even further. Finally, this heat is transferred into the storage water via a heat exchanger. The cooler refrigerate now returns to the start and the process begins again.
The beauty of the heat pump technology is that it doesn't rely on sunshine to operate, so it continues to make hot water day or night, in sunshine and rain, all year round. In addition, installation is quick and easy. The heat pump can usually be installed in the same location as an outdoor electric water heater and connected up to the existing plumbing and electrical connections, making it a great replacement for an existing water heater.
